A march-out clean is not a good house clean with the word army attached. It is judged against an inspection sheet, line by line, by someone whose whole job is to find the thing you missed. That is the part people underestimate when they decide to do it themselves the night before handover.
We do a lot of march-out cleaning around Catterick Garrison, Hipswell and Colburn, and the pattern is always the same. The families who keep their full deposit are not the ones who scrubbed hardest. They are the ones who cleaned against the list instead of against how the place looked to them.
A march-out cleaning job is judged against the inspection sheet
The inspection sheet is the whole game. It does not care that the living room looks lovely. It checks specific things in a specific order: the oven and the grill pan, the extractor filter, the inside of every kitchen drawer and cupboard, the skirting behind the doors, the window tracks, the tops of the door frames.
Those are the spots a normal clean skips because nobody looks there day to day. An inspector looks there first. Miss two or three of them and the deposit takes the hit, or you get called back to redo it on a day you have a removal van booked.
The places families miss most
When a service family asks us to step in after a failed inspection, it is nearly always the same short list.
- Oven interior, glass door and the grill pan, properly degreased, not just wiped
- Extractor fan filter, which often has never been cleaned in the whole tenancy
- Skirting boards and the gloss behind doors, where dust and scuffs gather
- Inside the kitchen and bathroom cupboards, shelves and runners
- Window tracks, sills and trickle vents
- Limescale on taps, shower screens and around the toilet base
None of it is hard. It is just slow, and it is easy to run out of time when you are also packing a house.
